The lesson from an empty sports analysis: When no data exists, do not write

A long sports analysis report recently came to my desk. It had all the required sections: tactics, fighter condition, organizations, business, rules, health risk, narrative, and industry flow. But every number had disappeared. No fighter, no event, no organization were named. Every column kept repeating the same warning: not enough information. The real danger is not the empty report. The danger is an editor under deadline pressure who fills that blank space with guesses. In martial arts, where a single second can seal a career, an unverified rumour can steer training, betting, sponsorship, and even retirement plans in the wrong direction. I recall a night in 2026 on a radio show in Incheon, when I said Son Heung-min was not yet a world-class superstar. The phone lines exploded. But I brought data: two goals against the top six, zero assists in nine matches against deep defences. Data did not prove me completely right, but it forced the debate to stay on the ground. Sports journalism needs a simple rule: before publishing a story, ask where the numbers come from. If there is no answer, stay silent. A truthful silence is worth more than a false article. If you have nothing to write, write about the reason you have nothing to write. That too is a sports story.
