Whitewash Misunderstood!

There is great misunderstanding about the appearance of whitewash. While it is a common belief that whitewash is transparent, the opposite is true.

Authentic whitewash is a heavy bodied opaque paint. The heaviness of it allows brush marks to remain in the finish. The result is a desired, simple artistic effect. Examples include swirls, waves, squiggles, etc.

Our whitewash is as good as it gets. Originally formulated for restoration projects for some of the best known museums and period villages in the country.

Warning: Diluting standard white paint with water to achieve a transparent "whitewashed" effect robs the paint of it's protective qualities.

Smooth or Gritty

Our whitewash is available in smooth and gritty formulations. The gritty whitewash has very tiny particles blended within it. Imagine when whitewash was made long ago. Perhaps in a barn. Impurities such as dirt generally found its way into the mixture. The result was small grit embedded in the dried finish.

The size of the grit is very very small. It is smaller than a grain of salt! To see it you have to get very close to the surface. The dried gritty whitewash is indeed extremely authentic in appearance. The grit also adds a bit of texture to the dried paint.

If gritty whitewash is not your cup of tea, then you'll find our smooth formulation of whitewash paint to be perfect for your home.

Museum Quality Restoration Finish

This innovative 18th and early 19th century museum-quality restoration finish is intended for almost any interior or exterior surface. It gives the authentic appearance of old White-Wash applied many years ago. Old Village Simulated White-Wash is being used on many restoration projects throughout the United States and has been endorsed by museum curators and professional historic paint consultants. Old Village Simulated White-Wash applies with the ease of latex paints with none of the problems or hazards encountered when using whitewash. It may be used on unpainted or previously painted walls, ceilings, fences and more.
